Are you fighting a losing battle with every fad diet known to humanity?

If you are fed up with unsuccessful weight loss programs, Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital has some great news. Commonwealth Bariatric Center, a new service offering weight loss surgery, has recently opened in Somerset, Kentucky.

With obesity being a serious health epidemic, the comprehensive bariatric center provides hope for those individuals who might qualify for weight loss surgery.

A report released in August from the Trust for America’s Health, ranks Kentucky as having the seventh highest severe obesity rate in the nation. Nearly 30 percent of Kentuckians are severely overweight. The Centers for Disease Control found that more than 40 percent of Kentuckians are overweight in a 2007 study.

So what defines obesity from severe (or morbid) obesity?
Excess weight can lead to multiple life threatening diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, GERD, high cholesterol, and increased chance for certain types of cancer.

Morbid obesity describes the significant increase of risk for these obesity-related health conditions, with the individual being 100 or more pounds overweight, or with a body mass index of greater than 40.

Weight loss surgery, which is a last resort for many individuals facing severe obesity, is now available in the Lake Cumberland region, to help combat this chronic condition.

John Husted, M.D., a nationally known and well-respected bariatric surgeon has established successful bariatric centers in Nashville, and most recently, in San Francisco. Known for his innovative surgeries and consistent excellent patient outcomes, Dr. Husted has been featured on the Discovery Health Channel. He has now relocated to Somerset, Kentucky.

“We are pleased to be able to open the first comprehensive bariatric program in this region of the state, stated Jeff Seraphine, Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital CEO.  “and we are fortunate to get someone the caliber of Dr. Husted to start our program.”

“We’re not just performing surgeries at our new bariatric center,” Seraphine continued. “We’re putting together a comprehensive program that will be life-changing for many people in this region.”

Heading up the center as the bariatric program director is Cathi Roskind, RN, CBN. Cathi transferred from Georgetown Community Hospital where she was instrumental in developing a nationally-ranked bariatric program. She has worked as a bariatric nurse for seven years, following eight years of critical care nursing.

Cathi fully understands what it is like to battle obesity. She is a weight loss surgery patient, which enhances her professional knowledge in bariatrics. She also works PRN as a Bariatric Legal Nurse Consultant and is on the ASMBS Task Force for RN credentialing in the bariatric nursing specialty.

“I am thrilled to be a part of bariatric program development at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital,” Cathi said. “My goal is to help establish the Commonwealth Bariatric Center as an ASMBS designated Center of Excellence and the center of choice for patients seeking weight loss surgery.

“With the available resources and abundance of dedicated, caring professionals at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, we will quickly become a nationally recognized bariatric center.”

The new center will offer a variety of surgeries including

  • Gastric bypass
  • Gastric sleeve
  • Duodenal switch (DS)
  • Adjustable gastric banding
  • Revision procedures
  • Vergito

In addition, patients will have the advantage of consultations with psychologists, certified bariatric nurse and bariatric dieticians as well as pre- and post-op educational classes, physical therapists, informational seminars and life-long support through group meetings and internet support sites.

Drs. Tommy and Rachel Shelton will also be offering adjustable gastric banding through Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and Commonwealth Bariatric Center
